Description

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is seeking applications for the Alfalfa Seed and Alfalfa Forage Systems Program (ASAFS) for Fiscal Year 2026. This program aims to support the development of improved alfalfa seed and forage production systems, practices, and technologies. Key areas of focus include increasing alfalfa yields and forage quality, improving harvest and storage systems, developing methods for yield and quality estimation for marketing, exploring new uses for alfalfa, and enhancing insect, disease, and weed management strategies. Projects must be integrated, including both research and extension objectives, and applicants are encouraged to form interdisciplinary and multi-location regional research and extension networks. The total estimated program funding for FY 2026 is approximately $3,702,297, with individual awards ranging from $150,000 to $300,000 per year for a maximum of three years. Matching funds are required on a dollar-for-dollar basis.
