FY2027 Research Grants for Beef Industry Advancement
National Cattlemen's Beef Association
The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA), a contractor to the Beef Checkoff, is seeking pre-proposals for four distinct research programs for Fiscal Year 2027. These programs aim to enhance the profit potential for beef and beef products by funding research in the following areas: * **Product Quality Research:** This program focuses on applied and basic science topics to advance knowledge in beef product quality. Topics include exploratory research on variability in beef products, real-time carcass non-conformance identification, and the impact of cattle characteristics on boxed beef. Existing research assessment topics involve cut consistency and the impact of structural shifts in the supply chain. * **Human Nutrition Research:** This program aims to expand research on beef's nutrient density and its role in healthy dietary patterns across all life stages. Key areas of interest include identifying and assessing the bioavailability of beef bioactives, understanding their role in health outcomes, and evaluating the interaction of beef's whole-food matrix on physiological outcomes. * **Pre-Harvest Beef Safety Research:** This program seeks to improve the body of pre-harvest beef safety knowledge. Exploratory research topics include the influence of environmental factors on safety risks, technology advancements, pathogen co-occurrence, and opportunities to reduce chemical hazards in the pre-harvest environment. Existing research assessment focuses on vectors for pathogen inoculation and emerging safety hazards. * **Sustainability Research:** This program supports research to advance beef sustainability knowledge, with all proposals needing to address at least one pillar of beef sustainability (environmental, social, or economic). Topics include unintended consequences of the cattle cycle, utilizing existing datasets for system-wide impacts, and benchmarking sustainability outcomes. All programs follow a two-part application process, beginning with a pre-proposal submission by May 31, 2026. Accepted pre-proposals will be invited to submit full proposals. Funding notifications for pre-proposals are expected in mid-June, with project start dates as early as January 2027. Overhead costs, principal investigator salaries, tuition, and equipment purchases will not be covered by the research grants.
