Description
The U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), through the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane, is seeking a lightweight, man-portable, belt-fed weapon chambered in 5.56x45mm to serve as the life cycle replacement for the MK46 series weapons. The objective is to integrate advancements in materials, manufacturing, and technology to provide operators with a technically superior weapon system that allows for effective shooting, maneuvering, and suppressive fire, with improved recoil for engaging targets at all effective ranges. The system must be interoperable with USSOCOM's suite of Visual Augmentation Systems and Weapon Accessories (VASWA). Key technical requirements include a maximum weight of 11.5 lbs (goal of 10 lbs) and a maximum length of 39 inches (goal of 35 inches). The weapon should feature a Safe/Automatic firing mode (Safe/Semi-Automatic is acceptable), with a Class I Mean Round Between Stoppages (MRBS) of at least 1,400 rounds (goal of 2,000+) and a Class I Mean Round Between Essential Function Failure (MRBF) of no less than 1,800 rounds. An effective range of at least 500m for area targets is also required. Secondary attributes include specific dispersion requirements, extreme temperature tolerance, compatibility with various ammunition types, a quick-change barrel (under 30 seconds), and extensive MIL-STD 1913 picatinny and M-LOK rail space for accessories. The system should also demonstrate high mean round receiver and barrel life, support left-hand feeding, and include an ammunition storage system for at least 100 linked rounds.
